Two men were killed Sept. 29 after crashing their vehicle through the garage door of a Sonoma, California home. The driver, who was reportedly speeding, lost control of the vehicle, crashed through the garage door and hit the car parked inside.
The accident caused an immediate explosion, sending a fireball through the home. The collision woke the family of five who were asleep in the home at the time of the accident. The family was able to get out of the house uninjured.
Home Suffered Extensive Damage
Tom Warren, owner of the home, rushed outside immediately after being woken by the crash. "By the time I got there, the car was in flames," he said. "I told my wife to take the kids and go."
Warren, a volunteer firefighter, grabbed his garden hose and extinguisher and attempted to battle the flames. The fire was too big for Warren to put out alone, however. According to reports, it took a team of firefighters from Gold Ridge, Graton, Sebastopol and Cal Fire 45 minutes to extinguish the fire.
The accident completely destroyed the garage and left the home with damages exceeding $100,000.
Accident May Have Been Alcohol-Related
According to CHP Officer Barbara Upham, empty beer cans were found in what was left of the burned 1993 Acura Legend, meaning the driver may have been under the influence at the time of the accident. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The names of the driver and passenger have not yet been released.
