Bloomberg LP Charged with Discrimination

Bloomberg LP, a financial news and data firm based out of New York, is currently facing a lawsuit filed by 58 women.

The company was founded by New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg.

Women File Disability Lawsuit

According to reports, the lawsuit was filed by women claiming that they received a pay cut, were demoted and denied opportunities when they became pregnant while employed.

The women say that they were paid less and when they returned from maternity leave, were replaced by “junior” male employees.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed the suit on behalf of the women and is asking the company to compensate the victims for past and future monetary losses.

Suit Claims

Court documents show that the plaintiffs are accusing their employer of disability discrimination.

“It’s not uncommon to find employers responding in this way to employees who become pregnant,” explains Deborah Rhode, a professor from Stanford Law School.

Although Michael Bloomberg retains a majority of stake in the company, he has supposedly given up day-to-day control.
