A Louisiana jury awarded a nursing home patient nearly $800,000 dollars for damages suffered as a result of neglect.
According to the lawsuit, Odessa Washington, an 80-year-old patient at the Meadowview Health and Rehabilitation Center in Minden, developed a large pressure sore on her right hip and experienced dehydration and malnutrition during her stay at the facility.
The lawsuit also alleged that Washington was also allowed to lie in her own waste for extended periods of time, violating her right to dignity.
“Thousands of Louisianans have entrusted nursing homes like Meadowview with the care of their aging relatives, and those facilities need to take their duties seriously. No one should ever have to endure what Odessa and her family have gone through,” said Kimberly Ramsey, one of Washington’s attorneys.
In addition to medical malpractice, the jury found the nursing home in violation of the Louisiana Nursing Home Resident’s Bill of Rights. The verdict is expected to near $1 million once all the costs and fees are assessed.
Washington has since recovered and has moved to a different nursing home.
