A settlement was recently reached in the case against the New Hampshire Conference United Church of Christ.
The suit was filed by a man who claims he was sexually abused as a boy by one of the church’s camp counselors.
Victim Takes Action
The lawsuit was filed anonymously by a man living in Nashua who accused Jonathan Tanguay of sexually abusing him as a child.
The alleged abuse reportedly took place at the Horton Center, a UCC summer camp and youth ministry in Gorham.
Abuse at Summer Camp
The man says he met Tanguay when he was ten and had just started attending the camp.
At the age of 17, the man entered into a sexual relationship with Tanguay.
Lawsuit Claims
The man states in the suit that Tanguay seduced him into their relationship after he had confided his feelings of insecurity, self-loathing and depression to the counselor.
He also claims that camp officials ignored previous complaints that had been made against Tanguay from other residents at the camp.
The relationship reportedly scarred the man and caused him mental anguish, which he tried to suppress through the use of alcohol and drugs.
