Two Lawsuits Filed Alleging Sexual Abuse by Nun

Two women filed personal injury lawsuits yesterday claiming that a Roman Catholic nun sexually abused them in the mid-1960s.

Patricia Schwartz and Karen Bitten both alleged that they were molested by Sister Benen Kent – a member of the Sisters of the Third Order Regular, Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Schwartz said that she was molested when her family visited Kent on several occasions in Rochester, Minnesota. Britten claimed that Kent abused her repeatedly during piano lessons in Chicago.

According to their lawsuits, the religious order knew that Kent suffered from mental illness and had a history of questionable behavior around children, and yet the ordered failed to protect them by concealing this information.

Last year, Britten’s sister also sued the order citing its failure to protect her from being sexually abused by Kent.

Kent died in 2003 at the age of 85.
