Surgical Error Prompts $200,000 Lawsuit

A veterans hospital in California is being targeted in a medical malpractice lawsuit filed by an Air Force veteran who lost a healthy testicle because of a surgical error.

Benjamin Houghton, 47, was scheduled to have his left, potentially cancerous testicle removed at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affair Medical Center. Surgeons, however, erroneously removed his right testicle instead.

Houghton, who still has not had his left testicle removed, and his wife, Monica, filed the lawsuit seeking compensation for future medical care and other unspecified damages.

The couple’s lawsuit comes on the heels of public criticism of the nation’s leading VA facility—the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.—which has been accused of providing patients with substandard care.
